President Signs Executive Order Calling For Fewer Childhood Vaccines
The Washington Post (8/10, A1, Diamond, Sun, Roubein) reports that on Monday, the president signed “an executive order that called for cutting the number of recommended childhood vaccines, spacing out those shots and making other changes that would upend decades of federal guidance.”
The AP (8/10, Swenson) reports, “The order advocates separating the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three different single-disease shots and administering all childhood immunizations at separate appointments whenever possible.” Additionally, it “directs the nation’s health department to improve research on vaccines, which are already extensively studied, and present a plan to offer separate measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines for children, since that is not currently an option in the” US.
Politico (8/10, Haslett, Lim, Gardner) reports that the executive order “recommends children get vaccinated for 11 diseases, down from the 18 immunizations that were recommended before” the president “returned to office.” Politico adds that “for the vaccines that are no longer recommended by the CDC, including shots for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rotavirus, meningococcal disease, influenza and Covid-19, the executive order directs families to talk to their doctors and make a ‘shared clinical decision’ about whether their children should receive them.”
CNBC (8/10, Constantino, Pramuk) reports, “The order also directs the Department of Justice to investigate where states are in violation of exemptions for childhood vaccine mandates, including parental authority and disability accommodations as well as religious and medical reasons.”
