GEZUNDHEIDT! from Dr. Wallace:
Dr. Thornton’s recent post of March 6 regarding the CDC’s new recommendation to wear a face covering when in public describes how aerosolized virus from normal breathing can be detected more than 6 feet away, and that a surgical mask can help prevent the spread of virus from normal breathing. But what about when we cough or sneeze? When we do so, droplet and spray from our breath is exhaled much more forcefully than with normal breathing. This video from the New England Journal of Medicine illustrates that with a sneeze, spray may travel up to 8 meters (around 26 feet)—well beyond the recommended 6 feet for social distancing– and reinforces the importance of covering your cough or sneeze whether you are wearing a face covering or not:
The video was in a previous blog, but is worth seeing again.
